Grolier Club Library Receives Large Gift of Antiquarian Bookseller Catalogues from UVA

Between January 2017 and October 2018, the Grolier Club received a generous gift of several hundred antiquarian bookseller catalogues, dating to the late 19th and 20th centuries, from the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library at the University of Virginia. The gift was facilitated by fellow Club member, David Whitesell, Curator in the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library.

The gift was made possible due to a project at the Small Special Collections Library to catalog its historical collection of over 700 linear feet of antiquarian booksellers’ and auction house catalogues. During the project, various broken runs of catalogues considered less central to the University’s collecting mission were selected for comparison with the holdings of the Grolier Club Library. Together, David Whitesell and Grolier Club Librarian, Meghan Constantinou, identified approximately 70 linear feet of catalogs issued by nearly 250 dealers—approximately 10% of the entire collection—that were lacking from Grolier’s outstanding collection. Thanks to this generous gift, the Grolier Club has been able to fill in numerous gaps in this important segment of its research collection.
